Horses are my passion! And starting a horse rescue has been one of my biggest life goals since I was younger. In order for it to become real, I'm going to need a lot of help doing so! So let's rescue them together!! If you would like to help support me in this very personal and meaningful mission, I ask that you take the time to read the description below. Thank you so much! 💕
As some of my members may know, I volunteered at a horse rescue for about 5 years when I was younger, and while there I developed an irreplaceable bond with many of the horses that had been rescued and lived there. Over the years I spent quite a lot of time with these animals and began to learn and understand things about them that I didn't previously know. One of the biggest things I came to realize is that horses need as much space as possible to roam to be the healthiest animals they can be, as that's what is most natural for them. But unfortunately in the equine community and industry, it's quite common for horses to live out their lives in 12'x12' (or smaller) stalls, only being taken out of these confinements for a few hours each day or possibly only just a few hours a week. It's considered convenient and humane as long as the horse is let out every once in a while. However, I have personally seen and come across studies that note the very negative impact that this kind of lifestyle can do to a horse. The horse will have numerous health issues and could possibly die an early death due to these issues as well as impaction in the stomach from not enough movement. Many of these issues can be avoided by providing a large enough pasture/paddock area for the animal to roam and run around when it needs to.
The rescue where I spent a good part of my life, unfortunately, conforms to these standards and keeps their 27 horses on a property that is a little under 3 acres, where each of those horses lives in a stall and only gets let out for exercise three times a week, for an hour at a time. Over the past three years, this rescue has lost 13 horses, most of them no older than 20 which is a very young age for a horse to have to be let down. I also had a deep connection with all of these horses and believed that I'd be able to see them for years to come whenever I visited. Another concerning fact is that a lot of these horses died from colic, the leading cause of horse deaths, which normally comes from issues in the gastrointestinal tract. In my personal belief, a lot of colic cases can be easily avoided by keeping horses in a large open area. https://www.equisearch.com/discoverhorses/turnout-and-colic-in-horses
Here's a link that talks about a small study done that shows the significant difference keeping a horse in a pasture has for its intestinal health. Watching this rescue lose as many horses as it has over the past few years while they claim to rehabilitate them and make their lives better has just been heartbreaking.
This leads me to my main point of this goal, which is to raise enough money to buy one of the horses off of the rescue, give it all of the necessary vet care it will need, have it trained to be ridden, and then sell it to someone that will give it a wonderful happy life in an environment that's healthier and more proper for the animal. Once I've successfully accomplished re-homing the first horse my goal is to rescue a few more and do the same thing. So this goal is a long-term goal to eventually save up enough for a very large property so that I can start an actual functioning horse rescue, but for now, I want to just work with the space I have and do one at a time.
I've set milestones and have more details below for what each milestone will be for. Thank you so much for reading this! It means the world to me, and I really hope that with everyone's help, we can make this a dream come true! 🥰
